WHAT IS IT?
FOUNDONMARS.com is a fun website that focuses on the incredible ability to explore another planet from our desks - brilliantly provided to us for free by the incredible people of Google Earth. WHAT'S IN IT? PARADOLIA is the strange ability of our minds to form concrete images from random shapes and patterns. Many images on this website are examples of this phenomenon.
A section of this site deals with the different interpretations people have of the significance of paradolia. For some the images perceived may have profound personal, spiritual significance, for other the same images may have no deeper relevance and may be interpreted in an entirely different manner. We hope to remain open to all ideas here as we explore paradolia in all it's forms.
GOOGLE EARTH (and MARS)
If you have never explored Google Earth before I urge you to try it NOW. Its quick and easy to install, easy to use, with lots of features to get better at as you explore, and you can dive right in and see photo-realistically almost the entire surface of the globe. Far away, close up, find your own rooftop and then search for sunken treasure in the Bermuda Triangle. It is addictive, totally fascinating and so inspiring to be able to explore places of the world you may never see in person. I found a little hidden cove I once sunbathed in on the south coast of Maui and Google Earth even let me see the tiny waterfall that was there.
Google Earth 5.0 has a new and most amazing feature. You can toggle your globe view to switch to a zoomable view of the planet Mars assembled from images collected by NASA and other space agencies. You can fly inside craters, explore trenches 3000 miles long, vertical cliffs two miles high, the tallest volcano in our solar system. And you can zoom in so close to view tiny details of eruptions, comet craters, lava flows, fractures, sand dunes and truly alien landscapes.
USAGE OF IMAGERY
Much of this website is involved with exploring Mars using Google Earth 5.0. Images displayed are often screen captures of Google Earth views or the NASA maps linked from those pages. We will do everything we can here to make sure correct credit and attribution exists on all imagery linked here, but generally, if credit is not given then the image is likely copyright to Google. We use these images here under the "Fair Use" terms of the licensing agreement for Google Earth 5.0.
